In these turbulent times, Galleries have had to make tough choices when it comes to spending their backers money! This is never more evident when the institution is being funded in the main by the Local Authority.

Art gallery crowded with people viewing and discussing photographs and paintings. Bright lighting, white walls, wood floor. Energetic atmosphere.
2025 Williamson Open Private Viewing

The Williamson Art Gallery is one case in point. I have supported the Gallery by entering their open call for the last few years but this year it seemed to have dropped off the radar. Artists in the area all thought that the writing was on the wall for this opportunity to show off their work. However, at the 11th hour, they announced a new call for entries, but with much more stringent conditions than in previous years.

I had a couple of friends over from Germany where we engaged in some wet plate photography at my studio a few days before, but as the private viewing was only a couple of days later, I managed to get them onto the guest list and Claus and Nicole (@malek_show) were able to join me for the celebrations.

I truly hope that the Gallery can weather the financial storms ahead and continue to support local artists in their quest for public recognition. We are blessed in the north west of England to have such a range and variety of artists, photographers and sculptors and it would be a travesty if this annual event were to disappear.

Thank you so much for taking us with you, it was a wonderful experience. Also the day in your studio, doing creative things together – we'll definitely be back.
